| Akron Natives The Black Keys Address Lebron James' 'Decision' Posted: 09 Jul 2010 12:12 PM PDT Everyone has an opinion on Lebron James and his move (revealed last night via an intense, hard-hitting interview special on ESPN). Naturally, people are curious about how folks in northeast Ohio feel. Patrick Carney, one half of the Black Keys and Summit county native, laid out his thoughts in a piece for the Wall Street Journal.
The Black Keys, of course, call Akron, Ohio home. It's a Rust Belt town known for tire manufacturing, producing Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, and, in the past few years, being the hometown of a championship-less basketball player who calls himself the King. So what do spurned Ohioans think of Lebron's departure for the hot beaches and shiny hubcaps of South Florida? Reaction has been varied, and often intensely emotional, but Carney, the Black Keys' fiery drummer, is surprisingly even-tempered. As the Black Keys are currently in Europe, where 'The Decision' was announced in the middle of the night, Carney wrote the piece before knowing where Lebron would land. But he is thoughtful, and perhaps a bit resigned. He's also willing to step into Lebron's shoes and refer to himself in the third person. Here's an excerpt: "The difference between Patrick Carney moving and LeBron James is obvious. Patrick Carney just moved. The band will always play shows there - The Black Keys will always be an Akron band. If LeBron leaves he will never be able to be as close to his fans as he is in Ohio–he is one of the few bright things to come from a struggling town. Patrick Carney is writing this from Dublin, Ireland on tour hours before the announcement is made. LeBron–if you choose to stay you just made a whole state have a reason to feel proud. If you choose to leave, you just made a few salesmen at a Ferrari dealership in Miami wet their lips. Either way, these decisions are hard. He is 25 and has spent his whole life in one town. No college. No Peace Corps. Maybe he needs to explore the world, and you can never fault someone for that." Read the full article at the Wall Street Journal. And residents of northeast Ohio, remember: the presence of Lebron James isn't necessary to live, and enjoy, life, which will assuredly go on. -- Words and photo by Conrad Doucette |
| Lady Gaga Performs New Song On Today Show Posted: 09 Jul 2010 10:50 AM PDT This morning, Lady Gaga performed on the Today Show. Not huge news. But she performed a new, unreleased song. Okay, pretty big news. Also, it's really good. Watch and listen after the jump.
The song is called "You and I" and is an epic rocker that builds from piano-based ballad to blown-out barroom rambler. Gaga should shoot a western, saloon-based, Mae West-style video to go with it... Gaga Goes West! Here's "You and I," as well as some other perfs from this morning (via Idolator), from who Meredith Viera called 'the most popular person on Facebook.' Too bad you can't buy her a gift anymore. -- Conrad Doucette |
