The Worm: A Rainy Day Turns Quite Dynamic in The New Pornographers' "Crash Years" Video

The New Pornographers

Who has time to watch music videos all day? Well, besides us here at Fuse. We know you're busy so The Worm brings you the most visually mind-blowing vids you might have missed otherwise. Don't thank us, just watch!

Today we're watching "Crash Years" from The New Pornographers. As a girl stops to open her umbrella, an everyday street becomes an enchanting intersection of colorful spinning umbrellas, synchronized skateboarders, intertwining cyclists, and technicolor pets. Geez, rainy days would be a lot easier to get through if this kind of stuff really happened every time it drizzled.

Click through to watch this clever video, then read some behind-the-scenes info from the director.

Now you've seen the video, read more from the director:

The video was inspired by the opening credits of Jaques Demy's "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg", and was filmed almost entirely in birds-eye-view perspective. The concept behind the video was to create a narrative through color, shape, and pattern. As the song begins, the movements and colors of the extras are simple and monochromatic. However, as the song builds and the first chorus hits, we get splashes of bright color and exaggerated formations in movement. Black and white umbrellas give way to bright red ones, white dogs magically turn blue. The visual build is quite gradual and rewards the patient viewer with more elaborate patterns and movement the further into the video they get. What at first appears to be an organic setting depicted in an extended cinematic shot, soon reveals itself to be a totally constructed unreality where people's activity is totally manipulated." - Sammy Rawal (Director)

Snoop Dogg Update: Solicits Advice From David Beckham, Tried To Rent Liechtenstein

Posted: 13 Jul 2010 10:45 AM PDT

Sd

When making a video, some artists will rent out a soundstage, or even have a few city blocks closed off. Not Snoop Dogg: Snoop tried to rent an entire country.

That would be Liechtenstein, the tiny, German-speaking Alpine state sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria (The Boombox via Vulture).  The country is small, with a population of approximately 35,000 and with an area of 61.7 square miles. Still, this is an entire country we're talking about -- surely one can't rent an entire country, right?

Wrong. Apparently, it would have been possible for Snoop to shoot a video in a rented Liechtenstein -- he just didn't give the nation enough notice. Said Liechtenstein property agent Karl Schwaerzler:

"We've had requests for places and villages but never one to hire the whole country before. It would have been possible, but Snoop Dogg's management did not give us enough time."

Wow -- a bit more notice, and we could have had a Temporarily King Snoop situation. TV people, this is a reality show waiting to happen... get on it. You're welcome.

In other Snoop news, the rapper revealed that when seeking feedback on unreleased music, he turns to an unexpected source: soccer star and current Los Angeles resident David Beckham (via the NME):

D-Becks is one of my guys. Whenever I make a record and get to the last few stages I call him in and give him a copy so he can hear it before it's done. "The Beckham family are my family too. They're automatic, straight to the top."

Snoop and Becks should rent out Liechtenstein sometime and kick a ball around.

U2 Reschedules Postponed Dates: Hello, Summer 2011

Posted: 13 Jul 2010 09:12 AM PDT

Bono

Those U2 summer tour dates postponed in the wake of Bono's emergency back surgery? They've been rescheduled for 2011... and with two intriguing gaps in the dates.

The rescheduled dates were announced on U2.com. All the dates in all of the originally scheduled venues have been rescheduled, though the 'New' Meadowlands Stadium won't be so new next summer.

Manager Paul McGuiness said that the rescheduling wasn't easy, and thanked fans for their support. Said McGuiness:

"We're delighted the dates are rescheduled and in all the same venues we originally planned to play. It hasn't been easy to accomplish this and I'd like to thank the managers of the many venues and sports teams across North America and Live Nation Global Touring for their help and cooperation in making this complex new plan possible. Above all we want to thank the U2 fans for bearing with us. They're the best and the band wants to get back to where they belong, surrounded by their audience."

The rescheduled run begins May 21, 2011 in Denver and ends July 23, 2011 in Minneapolis. The itinerary includes two notable blank spots: between a June 7 Oakland show and a June 17 Anaheim show, and between a June 18 Anaheim show and a June 26 East Lansing show. Bonnaroo, which will be celebrating its 10th anniversary, and which is generally held on the second weekend of June, falls neatly into that first gap. And Glastonbury has already announced that its 2011 festival will run from June 22 through June 26. U2 would have time to headline Friday night and make it to Michigan for the Sunday the 26th show.

As for the band, they're clearly excited and relieved to have the postponed dates rescheduled. The four members of the band posted a quick video in which Bono declares that he has been improved by 'German engineering' (a nod to his stay in a Munich hospital). He also takes the opportunity to apologize to those fans who were inconvenienced by the postponements before revealing that the band are currently working on new songs.

So see you next summer, U2, unless you're in Europe. In that case, see you next month.
