Arcade Fire Will Donate $1 Million To Haiti Relief, If You Do, Too

Arcade-fire2

The Arcade Fire might be a Canadian band led by an American, but Haiti has always held a special place in the band's heart. Keyboardist Regine Chassagne's family emigrated to Canada from Haiti, and the band have long supported, with both money and time, organizations that support the poverty-stricken nation. Now, they want to give even more, but they need your help.

In fact, they need a million dollars' worth of help. During an Arcade Fire show this week in Quebec City, frontman Win Butler announced that $5 donations to Kanpe, a new relief organization, would be matched, up to $1 million (CDN), by the band. Those wishing to donate simply txt to 30333. Kanpe is a new relief organization aimed at supporting Haiti's rural population, including those displaced from the capital Port-au-Prince in the wake of January's devastating earthquakes.

Butler made the announcement following the opening performance by Port-au-Prince band RAM. "Please," Butler, according to the New York Times, said, "Take our money."

RAM later joined the Arcade Fire during that band's performance of "Haiti."

If you're looking for even more Arcade Fire news, Billboard has a cover story interview with the band out today.
