NEON TREES: I may just win the award for seeing this Provo, UT band the most times in a four month span. I saw them numerous times in Austin, TX for SXSW (obviously with BBQ ribs in hand) and then back in NY opening for 30 Seconds To Mars at Roseland. This is a band you need to keep your eye (and ear) on especially since they are perhaps the progenitors of Utah Glam Rock. They bring the dynamic duo: frontman Tyler Glenn is an innate amalgamate of rockstar, ringleader, and cabaret King, and drummer/vocalist Elaine Bradley is the perfectly fierce complement. You know those rare albums you can listen to non-stop the whole way through? Put on their album 'Habits', start with opener "Animal", and start dancing. You (and your inner animal) will thank me later. PAPER TONGUES: This 7-piece from Charlotte, North Carolina bring you the infectious, "Ride To California" and "Trinity". With Aswan North on vocals you just want him to keep on singing. A one-of-a-kind frontman, his textured vocals fuse rock, rap, funk, and soul. Aswan is a win and so is this band's self-titled debut album. |
| Rise Against Cover Nirvana: VIDEO Posted: 19 Jul 2010 01:10 PM PDT In case you hadn't heard, the AV Club has been doing a neat little series called Undercover Club. The premise? Twenty-five songs have been chosen to be covered. As acts come on and choose a song, that song song gets crossed off the list. Those bands that come later in the series therefore have less of a choice of songs to pick from. Luckily for Rise Against, and fans, Nirvana's "Sliver" was still available. The original dates back to 1990, though it become more well known in 1992, when it was released as the single from the band's Incesticide compilation. Rise Against turn in a faithful rendition of the song, with singer Tim McIlrath's more measured vocal blasts providing a fine contrast to Kurt Cobain's primal growls on the original. Congrats, world: you've now got a wondrous second version of a classic tune. -- Conrad Doucette |

| Crystal Castles' Alice Glass Punches Fan Posted: 19 Jul 2010 11:17 AM PDT Crystal Castles' frontwoman Alice Glass apparently punched a fan during the Toronto band's Saturday show at the Latitude Festival in England. The flying fists were in response to Glass being groped while crowd-surfing. Yikes.
The incident occurred about twenty minutes into the band's set, according to the NME. Up to that point, Glass had spent the majority of the set surfing. At one point, however, Glass's breast was apparently grabbed. Glass began firing punches in the direction of the culprit, saying into the mic "You touch my t*ts, I kick you in the f*cking head." NME then reports that she spat into the crowd and yelled "bitch." No video of the incident has emerged, but a fan did post footage of Glass heading into the crowd (presumably) prior to the incident. The audio's terrible, but the clip is a nice window into the chaos that is the front of the crowd during a Crystal Castles set. And if you think this all sounds familiar, you're right: last year, Glass threw a punch at security guards who attempted to restrain her following a sound problems-induced instrument-tossing rampage. -- Conrad Doucette Photo of Crystal Castles at Lollapalooza 2009 by Conrad Doucette |
