| The RZA's Directorial Debut: Wu-Tang vs. The Golden Phoenix (VIDEO) Posted: 30 Jun 2010 11:27 AM PDT Wow: if the below trailer can be trusted, Wu-Tang vs. The Golden Phoenix is going to be one bad-ass kung fu flick. Watch after the jump. The movie, which does not yet have a release date, revolves around the quest for the 'Wu-Tang weapon,' surely a tool of awesome power not to be trifled with. Involved in the proceedings are members of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team, as well as Dr. King Ogun Ali Muhammad, 'founder of the Universal African Fighting System.' The trailer reveals the look and feel of the film to be wonderfully faithful to the aesthetic of classic kung fu movies. And the audio? Provided by none other than former Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante. Check out the trailer (The Playlist via Vulture) below: -- Conrad Doucette |
| Eminem Blasts To The Top Of This Week's Billboard Charts Posted: 30 Jun 2010 07:49 AM PDT Recovery has proven to be an apt title for Eminem's latest release: the album has shot to the top of the Top 200 charts on the strength of 741,000 copies sold. Well done, Marshall.
As you might have guessed, that figure is the largest one-week sales tally in quite awhile. The last to sell so many in the first week of release was AC/DC's Black Ice, which sold 784,000 copies upon release in October 2008. Billboard notes that digital downloads comprised a healthy portion of Recovery's sales: over 255,000 copies of the album were digital sales, making it the second biggest ever digital week for an album. Coldplay's Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends racked up 288,000 downloads in 2008. Recovery is Eminem's sixth overall chart-topping album. If you'd like to celebrate with Em, pick up tickets to the Detroit and New York shows he and JAY-Z are doing in September and tell him in person. Or just scream really loudly from your seat. -- Conrad Doucette |
| Drake Sued For Copyright Infringement By... Playboy?! Posted: 30 Jun 2010 07:04 AM PDT Did Drake use unauthorized material from a 1975 song in his breakthrough single "Best I Ever Had"? Playboy (yes, that Playboy) says Drake did.
The suit was filed in a California federal court on June 25. In the suit Playboy alleges that Drake used material from Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds' 1975 hit "Fallin' In Love." So why is Playboy suing? Because they own the rights to that song. And, naturally, it isn't just Drake being sued: Cash Money Records, Universal Music Group, and Universal Music Group Distribution are also named as defendants. Time to compare. Do you hear a similarity between "Best I Ever Had" and "Fallin' In Love"? Well, they're in the same key for starters... -- Conrad Doucette |
| Video Of The Day: J. Cole, "Who Dat" Posted: 30 Jun 2010 05:24 AM PDT Roc Nation signee J. Cole walks the streets of his Fayetteville, North Carolina in his debut video. Watch after the jump. "Who Dat" is available as a single now. -- Conrad Doucette |
